Introduction

The iGEM competition has expanded from a month-long design course to a 260-team summer competition involving 5000 participants. In the past, some teams have been unable to complete the competition because they did not plan ahead for the required resources: instructors, lab space, team members, or financing. Use this form to describe what your team expects to need in these areas, what you already have, and how you plan to get the remainder.

This Resource Description must be submitted by the team's primary or secondary PI before the team's application will be accepted by iGEM HQ. All questions are required.

Faculty and Instructors

Each team requires two Principal Investigators (PIs) who can be responsible for the team registration, budget, safety, and official matters. These individuals must be teachers or professors, and must be able to respond promptly to emails or phone calls from iGEM Headquarters.

Normally, the iGEM students provide much of the initiative and organization for the team, but they also require training and assistance. We have found that teams with only a single teacher or professor are much less successful. Each team must have at least a primary PI and a secondary PI. For more information about team roles, see the Roles page.

Who are the primary and secondary PIs? How will they be involved with the team during the competition?

Laboratory and Other Space

iGEM is a "design and build" competition. Most teams will require a "wet" biology lab, computers, and meeting space. What physical resources have been made available to the iGEM Team? Include any details available such as laboratory size, Safety Level, laboratory equipment, non-laboratory space, etc.

Team Members

We recommend that an iGEM team consist of 8 to 15 students, half from biological fields and half from other fields; half female and half male. We recommend that teams advertise for members in order to include a broader range of perspectives and to recruit very enthusiastic team members. What are your plans for the team composition?

Financial Resources

iGEM teams can require significant financial resources. You may have to pay the team members and instructors a summer stipend, laboratory materials and supplies can be costly, and all the team members and instructors are expected to travel to attend the Giant Jamboree in October. In addition, a $4500 team registration fee and individual attendance fees for the Jamboree are required.

What is your projected budget for iGEM 2016?

iGEM teams work hard to raise funds from various sources. How much of your projected budget have you already raised, and from what sources have you raised it? How do you plan to raise the rest of your budget?
