Final Deadline: October 21 Part Submission

Now that the judging forms are submitted and the wikis are done, there's only one big deadline left for the 2016 season: Part Submissions!

Part sample submission deadline 11:59 PM EDT Friday 21st October

This is a "send by" deadline! Be sure to send a sample of any part that you list on your judging form for medals and awards (only for the "Improve a previous part" gold medal criteria is a part sample not required).

A few notes on the sample submission deadline:
    • Your team MUST complete an online submission form, provide a tracking number, and ship your part samples by October 21st.
    • The parts you are sending MUST be documented on the Registry, and adhere to the Registry's requirements and guidelines.
    • Teams in China should send parts to GenScript.

Thank you and good luck at the 2016 Giant Jamboree!

iGEM 2016 Deadlines: Clarification

There has been confusion over the different deadlines this year. As the judging form deadline is five days before the wiki freeze deadline, we are posting this message with more information on the specific deadline details.

October 14: Judging Forms Due
October 19: Wiki Freeze!
October 21: Part Submissions (Send by this date)
October 24: Team Videos Due (optional)
October 27: Giant Jamboree begins!

Judging Forms Due 11:59 PM EDT Friday October 14th
In order to be judged for medals and awards, teams MUST complete judging forms by 11:59 EDT on Friday, October 14th.
A few notes on the Judging Form deadline:

    • You must complete your judging form by filling in the 150 word description boxes AND editing the required link page on your wiki.
    • You don't need to finish all wiki pages by the 14th of October, but you MUST remove the alert box for any awards you plan to compete for. See here for more information: Judging Form Instructions
    • You MUST create part pages for all parts that you intend to submit for medal criteria and for part awards. You cannot add part pages to the judging form after the judging form deadline. You do not need to finish these pages before the judging form deadline, but the pages MUST exist.
    • You don't need to submit parts by the judging form deadline. However, you MUST send parts by the "ship-by" deadline at 11:59 PM EDT on the 21st of October for those parts to count towards medal criteria and part awards. Some part number boxes may say [Not Submitted]. This message will change when you enter a part shipment number before the 21st of October part deadline.
    • The judging form MUST be finalized on Friday 14th. You can not come back to edit it later and you will not be eligible for any awards that you don't tell us about on the judging form.
    • Please see the judging form page for more detailed information: Judging Forms

We do not plan to reopen the judging forms this year. If you have not completed your form by 11:59 PM EDT on Friday the 14th of October, your team WILL NOT be eligible for medals and awards.

Wiki Freeze at 11:59 PM EDT October 19th
So that the judges can evaluate your wiki without it constantly changing, we will disable edits at 11:59 PM EDT on Wednesday 19th of October.
A few notes on the wiki freeze deadline:
    • All edits to your wiki MUST be complete by the wiki freeze deadline.
    • We WILL NOT open back up your wiki to allow you to change one or two things. If you delete your entire wiki at 11:59 PM on the 19th of October, iGEM HQ cannot restore it.
    • We recommend finishing your wiki between 2 and 24 hours before the wiki freeze deadline. The closer the deadline, the smaller the change you should plan to make.
    • We do not freeze the iGEM parts Registry. However, you should plan to have all your part page changes made by the wiki freeze deadline as judges may not see changes made after this time. If you put all your part measurement and characterization data up the day before the Jamboree, we CAN NOT guarantee that judges will see it.
    • Please see the wiki requirements page for more detailed information: Wiki Requirements

    • The parts you are sending MUST be documented on the Registry, and adhere to the Registry's requirements and guidelines.

iGEM Teams from China: Ship your part samples to Genscript!

With the Jamboree just a few weeks away, all iGEM teams should remember to add and document your parts to the Registry, and ship part samples to iGEM HQ.

For 2016, iGEM HQ is collaborating with Genscript to help iGEM Teams in China submit their part samples. iGEM Teams in China will ship their part samples to Genscript by the October 21 deadline, and Genscript will forward these shipments to iGEM HQ. For more information see the Registry shipping instructions.

If you are having trouble adding a secondary PI, see the instructions in the Registration Handbook.

Why do teams need to have two PIs?
All iGEM teams must have two PIs to participate in iGEM. Throughout years of running the competition, we have found that in general teams with at least two PIs have a better iGEM experience, learn more, and succeed even more than on their own.
Teams with only one PI often find that they don't get adequate support throughout the season. While iGEM is a student driven competition, PIs are important for providing guidance, having funding connections, dealing with university bureaucracy and regulations, and more.
Also, often a PI goes away for a portion of the summer leaving the team without any PI guidance for part of the season. Don't underestimate the value of your PIs!

For more details on team roles, see the Requirements and Team Roles pages.
