1. Education Activities

1.1. Presentation in Junior high school

We went to Zhong Jia bilingual high school to promote our project and the knowledge about synthetic biology.

1.2 Presentation in Senior high school

We also went to NO.1 senior high school in DangTu County in Ma’anShan, where we received a warm welcome while sharing our project. As the high school students have learned the genetic engineering in biology class, they showed a great interest in our project and bombarded us with a lot of questions. In the later half of our promotion, we gave a brief introduction of iGEM competition and the knowledge about synthetic biology.

1.3 Connecting to the freshmen

During the military training of freshmen, we publicized our project of 2016 and asked them to follow us on Wechat and fill our questionnaires. When we introduced our project and iGEM competition, they were very interested in what we said. They eagerly joined in our QQ group for 2017 AHUT_iGEM team and were very active interacting with one another.Through our concerted efforts, more and more people are getting to know iGEM competition and becoming more interested in synthetic biology.

2. Social Media

We realized that the way to reach the most people would be by social media. So this year, in order to have the maximum possible public outreach on the topic of Bio-compass, we decided to use different media to promote our project and raise public awareness of synthetic biology. We have done a lot of work on them, which includes Sina Weibo, WeChat and Facebook. We post our progress of the project on our fan page periodically and introduce the knowledge of synthetic biology on these Internet platforms.

Our efforts proved fruitful, as we have reached 1,028 in Sina Weibo, and many teams from home abroad have also paid attention to our project.

3. Communicating with experts

In order to determine the focus of iGEM 2016, we decided to present our project to the professionals with experience in research. So with this spirit, we wrote several articles about ourselves and our project and then communicated with Professor Ma, a master tutor. He gave us some good suggestions that broaden our minds after we exchanged our ideas with him. While it is certainly very satisfying to work in a laboratory, such communications that are very rewarding as well.

4.MOOC

MOOC has also been a means of communicating to society, reaching out for those who do not know SynBio yet. By integrating iGEM and online courses, we made our own MOOC videos where our team members are the speakers. The videos include the introduction of IGEM competition, the knowledge about synthetic biology, our project outline and lab safety. This year, there have been 73,639 learners who joined us by learning our MOOC.

5. Talking to the society

After explaining our project to friends and family, we realized the distance between the academia and the society and found that people are mostly completely unaware of what synthetic biology even is, let alone anything more specific. However, humanities and social sciences relate closely and noticeably to our everyday life, so we feel it’s the time we spread the idea of synthetic biology to the society.

5.1 Questionnaire Analysis

To evaluate the public reaction about synthetic biology and our project, our team conducted a survey.

Percentage Calculation Method of Multiple Choice Questions. Percentage=Times of Chosen\Marks of Effective Answer Sheet. It means the proportion of people who chose one answer in number of those who filled in the questionnaire. So the percentage addition of multiple choice questions may beyond one hundred percent.

This year, there are about 840 people filling out our questionnaire. About 92.8% people are from 18 to 30 years old and the majorities are undergraduate students. When asked ‘ how often do they use navigation software in their daily life?’, about 73.8% only occasionally use navigation software in their daily life, 22.6% often use navigation software to guide them in their daily life and only 3.57% don’t use it at all. We can conclude that navigation software plays an irreplaceable role in the life of the majorities.

In the meantime, concerning the problems existing in navigation software available in the market, about 47.62% think that the shortest pathway suggested by navigation software lacks of accuracy; 16.67% of people feel that navigation software available in the market consume a lot of electricity; 26.19% hold the opinion that except these problems mentioned above, there are other problems existing in navigation software available in the market and 9.52% think the navigation software available in the market is perfect and have no expectation for a better product to come out. Therefore, about 90.3% of people are expecting a new product to come out, which accords to our project of this year and makes our work more significant than we thought.

From the 840 completed surveys, the vast majority of people don’t know how biological computing system works, which gives us a hint to step up our efforts to improve people’s knowledge about bio-computing technology. When asked ‘How can we store the length of the road which is the important information of pathway plan in DNA?’, about 53.5% of people think we can the length of the road through the variety and amount and sequence of A、T、C、G/bases and 25% of people have no idea. In our questionnaire, we also asked the interviewees to give the specific account of the problems they think still exist in the navigation software available in the market and we have got a lot of feedback on our question. For instance, the maps in the software haven’t been upgraded in time and the information is not accurate, the maps don’t show some bus stops and subway platforms existing in some places and sometimes the pathway length is longer than it shows in the navigation software , etc.

5.2 Science day

On the 18th of September, we presented a stall at our university as part of our scientific promotion event. This was a great chance to reach out and engage with the public and communicate science to the public.

we had created posters about synthetic biology, the iGEM competition and our topic. On that day, we got into conversation with many people and informed them about problems with our project. We also explained what synthetic biology is and where you can find products from genetically engineered organisms in everyday life. To evoke enthusiasm for science in college students, we offered them several small experiments of making organic batteries of different fruits. In the meantime, we sold some milk tea to raise funds. The feedback is that they like our experiments as well as our milk tea, which was overwhelmingly positive!

6. Outreach activities

We made a quick flashing video with JSNU team, which shows our energy and passion. In this way of collaboration, we are like a big family working together to let more people knowing iGEM competition.
