Human Practices Silver

As part of their human practices, foundational projects generally aim to educate the general public about synthetic biology, rather than engage with them about the present and future development of their technology. Like the human genome project, our team wanted to develop a program similar to the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research Program. The ELSI program identified and anticipated issues related to those subject areas with regards to genomics.

We developed a modified version of the Socio-Technical Integrated Research (S.T.I.R.) protocol to assess and shape the outcome of our project after considering its greater societal, environmental, and economic impacts. We provided a well documented account of its impact on our wiki, as well as a template for future foundational iGEM teams and researchers.
