Micromanipulator at the Chair of Livestock Biotechnology from Prof. Dr. Schnieke

Thanks to the acquiescent disposition of the Prof. Dr. Schnieke from the Chair of Livestock Biotechnology at the WZW (TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan) to provide us with the possibility to use the micromanipulator at her chair's laboratory, we were able to conduct more specific experiments with our bioink cells. With the help and instructions of Dr. Nicolas Ortega, researcher at the lab with extensive experience with the micromanipulator, we were able to plan and test our bioprinting technique on a very small scale. Thereby our team members Julian and Javier were able to observe the ejection process under controlled conditions in great detail and document the behavior of our modified HEK cells containing ink.Thanks to this opportunity we could obtain useful and valuable visual material and a better understanding of our biotINK concept.

Rules of Conduct

Conduct in the iGEM Competition is overseen by two committees of external experts: the Safety Committee and the Responsible Conduct Committee. Failure to follow the rules may result in these committees choosing to take disciplinary action against your team, up to and including ineligibility for awards and disqualification from the competition. 4.1 Safety Teams must agree to follow all of the Laboratory Safety Rules throughout the competition.? 4.2 Responsibility Every iGEM participant must agree to adhere to the Responsible Conduct Committee's Conduct Policy at all times.? 4.3 Honesty Be intellectually honest. Describe your accomplishments accurately, and do not take credit for the work of others.? 4.4 Courtesy Treat everyone with respect (including teammates, instructors, advisors, other teams, judges, and Headquarters staff).?


Safety

Keep Your Activities Legal: In most countries, it is illegal to release GMOs or their products into the natural environment without extensive government permits and approvals. Obtaining these permits and approvals would probably take longer than the entire iGEM competition. Instead, you should focus your efforts on producing the best laboratory results. (And, of course, you should not release your GMOs illegally!) Be a Responsible Scientist: There are many extremely complicated risks involved in releasing a genetically modified organism (GMO) outside the lab. Without extensive testing, you cannot know if your GMO is safe for humans and the environment. It would be dangerous, even reckless, to release a GMO without the proper risk assessment and testing. Also, releasing GMOs is a huge international controversy. Because of this controversy, when synthetic biologists seem to act recklessly, they can damage the reputation of the whole field of synthetic biology. As iGEM team members, you are ambassadors between scientists and the public, so it is important that you be excellent scientific citizens!
