Human Practices

HP On the Road:

We went outside on the road to come in contact with people. We spread postcards with the topic synthetic biology and talked about the “fear of genes”.

Furthermore, we gave presentations at our university to inform the general public.

We also went back to school, to talk about Biotechnology as a field of studying - a topic which went way to short in our school time.

HP On the Web:

We think that nowadays, using the social is at least as important as going outside to the road. Therefore, we also became active on Facebook and developed strategies to inform the people.

First, we asked people in a survey what they now about vitamin B12, and about biotechnology

We started a big campaign to inform people about Vitamin B12 - a substance of which probably everyone already heared of. However, we gave the facts probably not everyone knew about.

When non-scientists hear about “synthetic biology” they often express doubts and fears. To improve the view on synthetic biology, to promote its many uses and even increase the interest in synthetic biology in the general public, we participated in the postcard collaboration proposed by the iGEM team Düsseldorf.

The Idea

Apart from developing and working on a scientific project in the lab, iGEM teams are encouraged to “look into the mirror” and to understand what others think about their project. This can range from thoughts about actual applications of the project to a general view on synthetic biology.

Our iGEM team tried to address the aspect of human practices by approaching it from both sides.
