Meeting Minutes

  1. Action items should be carried forward every week to ensure everything is completed on time.

  2. Send bios to instructors for them to complete.

  3. Dates given for jamboree are 27th to the 31st but does that include practices etc already.

  4. Our BioBrick has been ordered.

  5. Sixth formers day 20th and 21st.

  6. Re-send emails to Natalio, extra funding opportunity.

  7. Use an LDA tag for the degradation of GFP as it is more specific.

  8. Asked Tom and Matt that we need GMO documents to use the flow cytometer.

  9. The email that was sent to Macqurie University has been passed on, we should be receiving a reply shortly.

  10. Interlab study has been carried out again and data was collected. Data to be analysed and discussed in the next meeting. More repeats may be needed if we want to get any awards for the interlab.

  11. Bulb construct sent off to DNA 2.0 return in around 10 days.

    1. PSP1C3 needs sending

    2. Send plasmid along with the restriction enzyme information.

  12. We must think beyond education, using our systems and monitor and control fermentation processes, we are starting with a simple chasis (E.coli).

  13. Merging genetic and electric components, the breadboard is the prop to show our concept.

  14. Ron Weiss diagram, redraw to use as a tool to explain our concept.

  15. Look into more components even if they are only explored on paper not tested in the lab.

  16. Light bulb design document;

    1. Add modeling for the lightbulb.

    2. Use Sbol visual for the bulb design in the document.

    3. Think of an alternative, Plan B?

  17. Testing E.coli in the lab;

    1. Begin with heating without using the electrodes initially.

    2. Use the fuel cell as a container to test the light bulb.

    3. Source a thermometer for the raspberry pie.

    4. Use cuvettes that contain electrodes, used in transformations.

    5. Experimentally test LB broth heating with a battery without the presence of E.coli.

  18. Cost the light bulb variables with IDT and any other constructs and send off the designs.

  19. Primer design for luciferase can be added to the registry.

  20. Get in touch with Martin H from the talk about fuel cells.

    1. Potential for up amplification of the fuel cell.

  21. Judges do not like LB broth;

    1. There are always variations in LB broth

    2. Cannot be replicated

    3. M9 as an alternative.

    4. Choosing the correct medium is very important.

    5. Solid medium? Munich 2011 grew E.coli in a solid medium

  22. Next meeting we must include reports AND plans from each sub team.

  23. Surveys can be very problematic;

    1. Better use of time to collect data from literature.

    2. Engage with consumers and people likely to oppose the idea.

    3. Think about the lifecycles of the device, e.g. disposal

  24. Track selection deadline is 12th August

    1. Add to the agenda for next week.

  25. Component sub team

    1. Wider diversity of parts even if they are not made and/or tested.

    2. RFP alternative to GFP.

    3. Practice entering parts into the registry, very time consuming.
