iGEM Toulouse 2016

iGEM Toulouse Team presents
Paleotilis, a shield for the Lascaux cave

Back to the origins

What if iGEM stepped 18,000 years back?

At that time, cavemen painted extraordinary frescoes on the Lascaux cave (France). The cave remained stable until its discovery in 1940, which deeply disturbed its ecosystem. It was closed shortly after mainly because of contamination by fungi that cause colored spots on the frescoes.Nowadays, mechanical and chemical solutions are daily used and the cave is still in danger due to their limited efficiency.

At iGEM Toulouse, we thought about an innovative biological solution based on the last advances in synthetic biology. It consists in an engineered Bacillus subtilis bacterium that develops from bacterial organisms present in the cave. It releases antifungals when in close viscinity of fungi. Since we care about our environment, an inducible riboswitch-based double toxin/antitoxin system was created to preventDNA transmission and a physical device was designed to confine our strain.

Achievements

    Bronze medal

        • Register the team to iGEM, have fun during the summer and attend the Giant Jamboree with smile
        • Submit successfully the Judging form
        • Create a page in the wiki with attributions to every people that helped us in different ways
        • Document a new BioBrick and add it to the registry parts: pSB1C3-OriKan (BBa_K1937002) corresponds to a shuttle vector between E.coli and B.subtilis
          Registry (from )
        • Create and share a complete description of the team’s project in the Wiki
        • Attributions: our project could be possible thanks to several persons who helped us in different ways and we are very grateful
        • Plan to present a beautiful poster and a pleasant Prezi presentation at the Giant Jamboree

    Silver medal

        • Present strong commitment to Human Practices for Science Popularization by participating to different events in France, for Education by developing an education kit, for safety by minimizing the risk of incidents in the lab and for Ethics by creating a theatre play
        • Experimentally validate three new BioBricks: pSB1C3-OriKan (BBa_ K1937002), pSB B sOK-mini (BBa_ K1937001) and PnagA (BBa_K1937003) worked successfully as expected
        • Take part to active collaborations for the scientific community: creation of Multilanguage protocol videos thanks to 6 others teams
        HP/Silver

    Gold medal
